Feature & Follow (#13)

This Friday’s Feature & Follow question (hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison Can Read) is:

Q:Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

Retellings & Spin-off style books don’t bother me at all (Like Cinder, Leviathan or Tiger Lily), but similar concepts can and do bother me.  For example, the fact that Fifty Shades has made erotica suddenly spring up in popularity doesn’t bother me – it doesn’t even necessarily bother me that so many of them have the BDSM as a feature.  At the end of the day, the publishers (and the authors) saw a market, and it makes sense to target it.

However, the books that claim “For Fans of Fifty Shades” that are essentially the same character and plot? Those bother me a lot! I don’t see how they can get away with something that, in an academic world would count as plagiarism and would (at best) result in a slap in the rest and a refusal to publish from all reputable journals.  Maybe I’m just biased because we have such strict plagiarism rules!

  1. I agree one hundred percent. Personally I’m not a fan of 50 Shades, I couldn’t get past the first 10 pages, it was a terrible read, but the fact that there are like five books now popping up with the exact same ideas just a change of name is ridiculous. Plus the fact that publishers are actually publishing content that’s pretty much a rip off of one story is worse. They do it to make money, but still it’s so annoying. :/
