Read Play Blog is a meme about video games and books, posted every 16th of the month. Bloggers are encouraged to answer a discussion question, and recommend a video game that is similar to a book they liked. Hosted by Happy Indulgence & Read Me Away.
Strange but true, aside from reading or going out with friends, I’m not very good at ‘switching off’. I have the worst attention span for TV (I know, being bad at watching TV sounds ridiculous), so a lot of the time I’ll end up multi-tasking while watching – I’m almost always guilty of trying to blog at the same time! Playing games, like reading, completely distracts me and I get totally engrossed, but a bad habit of feeling like I can’t play games unless I have hours to play means that games have been a bit forgotten.
When I was younger, I spent HOURS playing games, from the not-cool-to-admit-to-but-oh-so-addictive neopets (yes, I still have an account) to thousands of hours playing The Sims 1, 2 and 3, to a lifelong obsession with the various Crash Bandicoot games (which remain my favourite games ever). Not to mention of course the obscene amount of time spent playing Pokemon on everything from the emulator on my computer to a Gameboy SP and onwards.
It’s sad but true that games fell by the wayside hugely when I started uni, and I pretty much missed completely the upgrades from Playstation 2 onwards. Although I bought myself an Xbox 360, aside from playing a lot of Fable 2 and 3, it sat largely ignored. I bought myself an old Gameboy SP off ebay and adored playing Pokemon on it until a housemate deleted my game not once but twice! I occasionally join in with games with Matt on his PS4, with the Lego games with my sister, or with something like Super Smash Bros for game nights with friends, but the only real remnants of game love are The Sims 3 and Pokemon on the DS.
I’m joining up with Read Play Blog to a) rediscover my love of games and b) hopefully find a few recommendations for games I might love that aren’t first-person shooters (which I’m appallingly bad at!).
January’s theme: What games are you looking forward to in 2015?
So we’ve already discussed my lack of awareness of anything resembling current, so instead, I’ve picked a few games that aren’t new this year, but that I’m hoping to finally play in 2015!
I’m a huge wimp, but I got absolutely hooked on the story in The Last of Us when Matt was playing it, so I’m determined to give it a chance. He got the PS4 remastered version for Christmas too, so it’s just sitting on the shelves waiting to be played, which is a definite bonus!
I’ve heard so many great things about this one, and I have to admit, I’m sort of hoping it can fill the gaping hole left by Crash Bandicoot 😉 I feel like platform options on the PS4/Xbox 360 aren’t great, so I’m determined to give this one a chance.
Zoo Tycoon 2
This one sort of had to make the list! I’ve never played any of the Zoo tycoon games, though I’ve played Rollercoaster Tycoon, Theme Hospital and Sim Safari, so this one seems like it’s likely to be a success. Plus, you know, given my love for zoos, it’s a must right? I got these for Christmas this year but I don’t have a CD drive on my laptop so I haven’t yet installed them. Any bright suggestions for me?!
Matt’s picks for me
The logical first step in finding new games for me, is of course, asking my game obsessed other half. He knows the sorts of things I like, and perhaps more importantly, the things I don’t! I asked him for recommendations, and he chose these four (along with The Last of Us, but I’d already picked that so he can’t have the credit!).
One of the very few post-PS2 games I’ve played, I adored Fable II. My housemate and I spent weeks poring over a borrowed guidebook, completing quests, earning money and generally working our way through the game. The easy to follow navigation and the mini quests made it less frustrating and intimidating to us two new-to-xbox players, and it was just generally so much fun to play.
We’re 15 days into the year, and aside from a habit of playing http://2048pokemon.com/ on my phone during lectures, I have yet to play any games this year. Having said that, now that my exam is over I can’t wait to spend some time this weekend just getting engrossed in The Sims again before the next assignment begins!
