Harry Potter MotW: Favourite Dean Moment

[This post is a response to Harry Potter Moment of the Week and part of Harry Potter Month!]

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week isFavorite Dean Moment

So, confession, I love Dean but I think a lot of that comes from fanfiction (Dean/Seamus shipping anyone?!), because I struggled a little to come up with a favourite moment for Dean. Of course I did come up with one, it just took me a moment 😉

We’re fighting, aren’t we? The message said Harry was back, and we were going to fight! I’ll have to get a wand, though…

Offering to fight, against literally the most dangerous enemies possible, with no wand? I poke fun at Gryffindors for being reckless (comes with the Slytherin territory I guess) but this to me is just the absolute perfect expression of Gryffindor courage. I don’t think Dean volunteers to fight without a wand because he thinks it’ll be cool, or epic, or heroic, or anything like that, I think it just genuinely doesn’t occur to him that he’d let his friends fight without him.

Harry Potter MotW: Favourite Ginny Moment

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is ‘favourite Ginny moment’

While I love Ginny’s fierceness, her determination and her generally kick-ass nature, one of my favourite Ginny moments is actually nothing to do with any of those qualities.  It’s a funny, companionable moment with Harry, Ron & Hermione (perhaps even more surprising considering I’m not a hugeHarry/Ginny fan.  It does come from my favourite Harry Potter book so maybe that helps a little!

“You’d think people had better things to gossip about,” said Ginny as she sat on the common room floor, leaning against Harry’s legs and reading the Daily Prophet. “Three Dementor attacks in a week, and all Romilda Vane does is ask me if it’s true you’ve got a Hippogriff tattooed across your chest.”
Ron and Hermione both roared with laughter. Harry ignored them.
What did you tell her?”
I told her it’s a Hungarian Horntail,” said Ginny, turning a page of the newspaper idly. “Much more macho.”
Thanks,” said Harry, grinning. “And what did you tell her Ron’s got?”
A Pygmy Puff, but I didn’t say where.”

Harry Potter MotW: When would you leave Hogwarts?

[This post is a response to Harry Potter Moment of the Week and part of Harry Potter Month!]

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is ‘Would you finish your studies at Hogwarts in your 5th year, or would you go on until the 7th year?’

This is an easy one for me – stay on until the 7th year for sure!  Why would I not want more time at Hogwarts?! I’m sure Harry was told he needed at least 5 Exceeds Expectations grade NEWTs to become an auror (did I make this up, anyone know?!), so if we assume we get to take 5 subjects I’d want to take…

  • Care of Magical Creatures: I’m an animal lover, and (most of!) the magical creatures we’ve heard of so far are amazing, so I definitely want to get the chance to find out about more.
  • Potions: Well as a Slytherin, it’s got to be done right? Plus, I think I’d be quite good at Potions, since I’d be quite meticulous at following the recipes.
  • Charms: This just seems pretty fundamental, too important to miss!
  • Transfiguration: Transfiguration would be amazing, and I feel like taking the NEWT might give you an advantage in managing to become an Animagus would be really cool.
  • Defence Against The Dark Arts: Let’s be honest, we’ve seen how magic can be abused, and so I’d definitely want to learn to defend myself. Plus, with a decent teacher, it’s also just a really interesting subject!
Would you want to stay until 7th year or leave at the end of 5th?

Harry Potter MotW: Desert Island Stranding

[This is a response to Harry Potter moment of the week. If you’d like to join in, head on over to Lunar Rainbows or Uncorked Thoughts for the full schedule of upcoming themes!]

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is ‘Which character would you want to be stranded on an island with?’

Okay, so I have to admit that my first thought went to easy-on-the-eye Harry Potter characters, but I’ve reined that impulse in (for now anyways).

In terms of getting OFF the island, Hermione seems like a great choice, but I have to admit, I’d be a little worried about her cooking skills if for some reason we couldn’t get off the island…  Luna would be great fun to hang around with but then again, given the tea Xenophilius Lovegood made, maybe her cooking taste can’t be relied on either!

Dumbledore or McGonagall would probably be great at keeping us alive and getting off the island, but I think I’d feel judged when I’d inevitably be useless!  I don’t think I could handle Ron ALSO complaining about being hungry (because I’m like him and want food every twenty minutes and with two of us that could get old fast) so I’m going to go with….

Honestly, I debated back and forth between Ginny and the twins for a LONG time.  I feel like Fred and George would be great fun, and that they’d be surprisingly resourceful, but I also feel like if we couldn’t come up with an immediate solution for getting off the island, they might just give up and enjoy being on the island for a while, throwing coconuts at each other or something.  Ginny on the other hand would still be fun to hang out with, still resourceful, but would definitely have some sense of urgency for finding a way home (getting back to Harry obviously!)

Which character could you handle being stuck on a desert island with?

Harry Potter MotW: Books I’d recommend to Draco

[This is a response to Harry Potter moment of the week. If you’d like to join in, head on over to Lunar Rainbows or Uncorked Thoughts for the full schedule of upcoming themes!]

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week isWhich Books Would You Recommend to Draco?

This week is a really hard one, but also good fun!  I can’t imagine Draco reading anything contemporary without complaining about the stupidity of muggles, so I stuck with some fantasy and sci-fi picks.

First up, Prince of Fools. I loved Jalan, the main character, who is all about himself, but isn’t evil.  I’d hope that Draco can see you don’t have to be a pure-as-snow good guy or a Death Eater – Jalan is the perfect example of a likeable, charming character with some questionable morals and a strong sense of saving his own ass.

Second, A Game of Thrones. A Game of Thrones is all about shades of grey (not like the E.L. James kind!), no easy black or white decisions here.  Plus it’s dramatic and gripping and there’s plenty for him to get lost in (plus dragons).

Finally, The Humans because I think if anything could convince you that people are fundamentally all the same and make you appreciate being human, this is it!

Which books would you recommend to Draco?
