Announcing: Harry Potter Month (3.0)!

HP month badge2016

In July 2015 myself and Micheline ran Harry Potter Month 2.0 and had an absolute blast! This year it’s back, and hopefully it’ll be bigger and better than ever, because we absolutely loved writing for it, reading and sharing your awesome posts, and competing in the House Cup!

What’s Harry Potter Month?!

In case you weren’t aware last year or need a recap, Harry Potter month is basically a month long celebration of all things Harry Potter!  We chose July because it ends with Harry’s birthday, and of course this year it’s also building up to the release of the Harry Potter & The Cursed Child script book.

There are two main ways to join in:
1) Posting Harry Potter related blog posts any time throughout the month
2) Participating in the House Cup – earning points for your House and trying to win the House Cup!

You can do one or the other or both, and there’s no minimum or maximum number of posts if you want to post.

What can I post about?

Pretty much anything as long as it has SOMETHING to do with Harry Potter! For example you could post….

  • Reviews of the books or films
  • Comparisons of the books v the films
  • Favourites lists: characters, quotes, scenes, pairings
  • Inspired by Harry Potter: Fashion, make up, nail art, recipes
  • If you liked Harry Potter you might like…. books, tv shows, films etc
  • Fanfiction: Fanfics you’ve enjoyed, fanfics you’ve written, fanfic challenges you’ve taken part in or would like to take part in
  • Discussions: Such as Why you love Harry Potter, which House you think you’d be and why,
  • Harry Potter crafts: wallpapers, bookmarks, icons, recipes, drink recipes
  • Harry Potter parties: Game ideas, decor ideas, drinking games

What’s the House Cup all about?

You choose your Hogwarts House, and then have fun earning points by completing any of a number of tasks, such as watching one of the films, commenting on other bloggers’ posts, making a HP related craft or playing on Pottermore! The full list of tasks and their points will go up on the 1st of July, but it was huge fun last year, and there will be a giveaway involved!  Last year Hufflepuff got twice as many points as any other House – will it be the same this year?!

How do I get involved? / I’m not sure but maybe!

We’ll each have a linky for posts, (as well as a House Cup sign up post) going up on Friday 1st July, so just pop back then if you want to take part 🙂

We hope to see you soon!

Harry Potter House Cup Update

HP month badgeSo it’s time for our first House Points update!  All the points have been added to the main house cup post, and I’ve left a comment so you can clearly see where I’ve added up to – anything after that comment will be added on next week.

With five days down, the current status is:

In joint first place – Hufflepuff & Slytherin on 70 points each

In second place – Gryffindor on 27 points

In third place – Ravenclaw on 24 points

Where the points came from this week…..

  • 10 posts
  • 1 book read

The top earner this week was Alex with an impressive 50 points earned!

There are still 26 days to go, so anything could happen yet – there’s plenty of time for things to change between now and the end of the month!  By the end of last year’s House Cup, more than 1000 points had been earned, and we’ve got more people this time, so who knows what the final scores will be?!

Harry Potter MotW #6: If you could be a character for a day, who would you be?

[This is a response to Leah’s Harry Potter moment of the week. If you’d like to join in, head on over to Uncorked Thoughts for the full schedule of upcoming themes!

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is the “If you could be a character for a day, who would you be?“.

Oooh this is one of the easier HP moments I’ve taken part in….

Luna seems like the most obvious choice to me, because she does what she wants and therefore has the most freedom!  If I wanted to be sociable I could go hang out with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville and Ginny, but equally if I wanted to wander around staring at things like I’d never seen them before, no one would think anything of it 😉  I also think Luna would probably know the hidden secrets of Hogwarts because she’s observant like that.  I’d be able to see the Thestrals, to explore the Library and the Room of Requirement in peace, and play around with magical clothing (roaring hats anyone?) without anyone giving me a second glance!

Who wouold you want to be for the day?

Harry Potter MotW: Most Inspirational Moment/ Passage

Harry potter month

[This is a response to Leah’s Harry Potter moment of the week. If you’d like to join in, head on over to Uncorked Thoughts for the full schedule of upcoming themes!

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is the “Most Inspirational Moment/ Passage“.

Okay, let’s be honest , this week Leah’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is pretty much impossible.  The books are absolutely FULL of inspiring moments and quotes – from Slughorn returning to Hogwarts, and then staying to fight, despite his terror, to Hermione wiping her paren’t memories, to Harry knowingly going to his death…

SO I’m cheating 😉 I’ve picked one inspirational moment….and an inspiring quote (or in some cases two) from each of the books, because hey, how is a girl supposed to choose?!

The moment:

I went back and forth on which moment to choose for ages, but in the end, I kept coming back to Snape (I tried not to, honest).  I eventually decided that the most inspirational moment, for me, is when Snape decides to watch over Harry after Lily’s death.  I think it would have been so easy at that point, heartbroken and angry, to give up.  To go back to being a Death Eater, or to try and get revenge for Lily’s death, or to say screw this and hide off somewhere far away from the wizarding world.

To deliberately look after her son – who Snape has no bond with at all – means seeing constant reminders of Lily who is gone.  Reminders of James who he hated, and of course above all, a reminder of their love for each other, of the fact that James Potter got the girl….That would be so painful and yet Snape does it.  Not to impress Lily (who is, after all dead) or for any sort of recognition…

The quotes:

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.

– One of my favourite quotes in the whole series!

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.

(Or perhaps better yet, animals!)

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix

Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

It was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew – and so do I, thought Harry, with a rush of fierce pride, and so did my parents – that there was all the difference in the world.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“He must have known I’d want to leave you.”
“No, he must have known you would always want to come back.”

Which do you think are the most inspiring moments/passages?

Harry Potter MotW: Best Ron Moment

Harry potter month

[This is a response to Leah’s Harry Potter moment of the week. If you’d like to join in, head on over to Uncorked Thoughts for the full schedule of upcoming themes!

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is the “best Ron moment”.

I’m not a huge Ron fan, but he’s undeniably a huge part of the books, and he’s got his fair share of awesome moments.  Although he grew a lot throughout the series, I think his best moment is really early on…

“The best played game of chess that Hogwarts has seen these many years”

I love some of Ron’s funny moments too, but this is probably his best moment for me – sacrificing himself, at age 11, to help Harry get through to the other side.  Not only was it bound to hurt (at least), he knew he was sending his two best friends on into unknown danger that he couldn’t help with, or be a part of…

Not to mention that of course it was Ron’s brains and logic that allowed him to identify the winning strategy in the first place.  Even though he can come across as silly or even stupid at times, he proves that he’s not.  He was simply brilliant in McGonagall’s chess chamber, and so for me, this is his best moment.

Which do you think is Ron’s best moment?
