Bloggiesta mini challenge: Get organised!

Amanda from On A Book Bender challenged us to get more organised this bloggiesta! I already use templates to some extent, so I decided to give the other two sections (Finding a weekly schedule & listing my monthly posts) to try and get more organised.  This was a huge help for me, because when I started blogging, I covered a lot more topics until I got sucked into book blogging and left everything else I wanted to say stranded somewhere!

My schedule at the moment:
M –What are you Reading?
T – Top Ten Tuesday
W – Oh, How Pinteresting
T – Open
F – Feature & Follow
S – Open
S – Stacking the Shelves
There’s a few big issues with this schedule though:
1) Too many memes compared to content
2) Too heavy a focus on book blogging
3) No structure in terms of content posts
4) Very little flexibility

How it got so bad:
1) I can see looking at this that I have too many memes, but at the same time, now that I’ve started, I love doing them, and just wouldn’t know what to cut!
2) When I started the blog, I had lots of ideas in terms of recipes, student life etc….then I discovered the book blogging community and just got sucked in a bit, and forgot my original broad purpose!
3) This pretty much came out of issue 2 – because I got so drawn into book blogging, other content just started slipping more and more, until it felt like I SHOULD be posting reviews on all my open days

How can it improve?
1) I don’t have a clue which memes I would cut out, so I’m going to try reducing them just a bit/adding more content into the posts at the same time and see how that works (see below!)

I could just keep all the memes and add second posts in on those days but I think that level of commitment just won’t be feasible around my final year at uni! Plus, I don’t really like having multiple posts on one day when I can help it (though I make exceptions for blog tours because they’re infrequent enough not to irritate me)

M – Monday plans – what are you Reading, what I’m cooking, my planner for the week & A recipe
T – Top Ten Tuesday
W – Oh, How Pinteresting (fortnightly? alternating with open slot)
T – Creative: Fashion/DIY/Make up etc
F – Feature & Follow & Student Life
S – Review
S – Stacking the Shelves
So here’s how my monthly list looked with that schedule

Monthly list (40 posts: 2 open)
Monday Plans:
1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th,
Recipes:
1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th,
Top Ten Tuesday:
2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th,
Oh, How Pinteresting:
3rd, 17th, 31st,
Open slots:
10th, 24th,
Creative:
4th, 11th, 18th, 25th,
F&F:
5th, 12th, 19th, 26th,
Student Life: 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th,
Review: 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th,
STS:
7th, 14th, 21st, 28th,

And maybe I’m just a lazy blogger, but 40 posts is just too many for me – especially when blogging has to be slotted in around final year, which promises to be stressful.  So, what to cut?

I figured I definitely wanted to keep Top Ten Tuesdays (especially because they can be scheduled in advance), as well as Monday Plans (with my added content) & Stacking the Shelves.  So I tried out this schedule below:

M – Monday plans (weekly) & recipe (fortnightly)
T – Top Ten Tuesday (weekly)
W – Oh, How Pinteresting (fortnightly, alternating with open slot)
T – Creative: Fashion/DIY/Make up etc (fortnightly, alternating with open slot)
F –Student Life (weekly)
S – Review (weekly)
S – Stacking the Shelves  (weekly)
So here’s how my monthly list looked with that schedule:

Monthly list (34 posts: 6 open)
Monday Plans:
1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th,
Recipes:
1st, 15th, 29th,
Top Ten Tuesday:
2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th,
Oh, How Pinteresting:
3rd, 17th, 31st,
Open slots:
4th, 10th, 12th, 18th, 24th, 26th
Creative:
 11th, 25th,
Student Life:
5th, 19th,
Review: 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th,
STS:
7th, 14th, 21st, 28th,
It was tough, but I’ve cut out F&F (for now at least) – it isn’t something I can schedule in advance, and most Friday mornings I have lectures, so it’s a bit of a pain really.  I’ll still join in as and when I can, but at the same time, I don’t want to stress over it.
I’ve also cut some of my categories (Creative, Student Life & Recipes) down to once a fortnight – this is just to allow a little more flexibility, though the open slots may well get filled with their original roles anyway depending on my mood!

If I’m honest, I definitely think that this will continue to be a work in progress! For one thing, I haven’t slotted blog tours in anywhere there, and for another, there’s still only one open slot a fortnight.  It’s a good starting point though, and I’ll test it out and see how it goes.

  2. Well done for sorting that out. I agree, when I looked at your schedule, I also thought there were too many memes. Doing some of them fortnightly is a good idea! You don’t lose touch but you don’t have quite that many in a week.

Good luck with sticking to your plans!
