Harry Potter MotW: If I could change one thing about book 1…

[This is a response to Harry Potter moment of the week. If you’d like to join in, head on over to Lunar Rainbows for the full schedule of upcoming themes!]

The theme of this week’s Harry Potter Moment of the Week is ‘If you could change one thing about book 1, what would it be?’

Okay, this topic is HARD.  I mean, change one thing and you could change everything, drastically, further down the line.  I’ve picked two things, both pretty minor.

1. “there’s not a single witch or wizard who went bad that wasn’t in Slytherin.” – Hagrid

Okay, sticking up for my House here 😉 This isn’t one you notice until after Prisoner of Azkaban, when you find out about everyone thinking Sirius betrayed James & Lily, but when Hagrid says this, he’d have been under the impression Sirius, a non-Slytherin, went bad –  clear exaggeration and prejudice against the Slytherins.

2. The boa constrictor winks at Harry

A silly point, but as someone with a pet snake I can tell you they don’t have eyelids….

What would you change about the first Harry Potter book?

  1. I agree completely about Slytherin, I don’t think our house gets represented fairly. I feel like JKR gives pretty much every character in the books a fair chance. Voldemort and the Malfoys and Snape all have something in their past which makes you think they could have turned out differently if they had made a different choice. And yet when it comes to Slytherin as a house, they are all evil. I would have liked to see at least one likeable Slytherin, I’m sure there were at least a few who didn’t like what was going on in Hogwarts during DH and would have run off to the Room of Requirements with the rest of the DA.

Interesting fact about the boa constrictor. I’ll be sure to laugh about it next time I read the book.

  2. I tend to agree with the Sorting Hat when it comes to the Houses, I’m not sure if it’s such a great thing. I mean, clearly NOT all Slytherins are evil, just like not all Gryffindors are brave. I wish that we’d gotten to know some good Slytherin’s, more than just Regulus Black and Slughorn! And LOL @ snakes rolling their eyes. With no eyelids XD

  3. I like both of your suggestions. I’d forgotten that the snake winks at Harry. It’s so small but it’s true. I think you bring up a great point about the prejudice against Slytherins. Clearly, not all Slytherins are evil. I think it would be interesting to see Slytherin’s talked about in a better light. There was a post somewhere on the internet I saw recently that talked about what would have happened if instead of Cedric being the Hogwarts champion in the Triwizard Tournament, it was the Slytherin Cassius something or other. It went on to describe how at first three of the four houses in Hogwarts would have boo’d. Slowly, people would see Harry and Cassius interacting in the same way that Cedric and Harry did, Wormtail killing Cassius even though he was a Slytherin because he was the spare and it didn’t matter to Voldemort what house he was in. It culminated with the students at Hogwarts understanding that the stereotypes and prejudices taught to them were wrong. Slytherins stay and fight at the battle at Hogwarts side by side with all the other houses. It’s very emotional to think about. Slytherins deserve a changes just as much as everyone else.

  4. I agree 100% about the whole prejudice against the Slytherins. It’s one of the worst prejudices in the series, just as bad as the whole mud-blood prejudice. I’m not Slytherin, but obviously not every single Slytherin is evil or will be evil. If that was the case I think there would have been much more Death Eaters then there was. It kind of seems that each of the houses have prejudices against them, all Slytherins are evil, all Hufflepuffs are stupid, all Ravenclaws are stuck-up, and all Gryffindors or stupidly brave.

    1. Yep 😉 A royal python, who was so small when I bought her she came home in a chinese takeaway size box! She’s about 4 foot now I’d guess.

  5. I do agree that Slytherins get judged harshly just because of their House. I like to think that just as there must be some sketchy characters in the other 3 Houses, there have to be some good Slytherins. 🙂 And I’ll never think of the boa constrictor scene the same way again, lol.
