2017 challenges

Netflix & Books challenge

A yearly challenge focused on watching television shows we’ve been wanting to get to (both new and old), and reading books we’ve been wanting to read that match some fun challenge prompts. If you choose to, you’ll have the chance to earn points throughout the year.

Well this challenge just seems seriously cool to me, and fits in nicely with my Blogger Balance challenge too, so I couldn’t resist!  Because I love seeing visual progress, I will be taking part at Level 2 (competitive) because then I can see the points rack up throughout the year 😉

The Books – TBR List

Same Trope or Premise

Feedback by Mira Grant & Revolution (both post-apocalyptic)

I loved Mira Grant’s Feed series, so I was thrilled to discover this year that a fourth book in the series was coming out.  I saw some of Revolution and while I enjoyed what I saw, I ended up watching it out of order and then it got cancelled…

Fallout by Gwenda Bond & Arrow/The Flash (both superheroes)

I really enjoyed Smallville and I’ve been thinking about starting either Arrow or The Flash for ages but just not got round to it.  I think part of the issue is that The Flash probably appeals to me more but I don’t know if I need to catch up on Arrow first, and if I do, being intimidated by how much there is to watch!

The Last Star by Rick Yancey & Stranger Things (both aliens)

I loved (along with the rest of the world I think!) Stranger Things, and I have to admit, I can never resist a book about aliens!

Title mentioned in a TV show

Harry Potter & The Big Bang Theory

I’m not up to date with The Big Bang Theory so I’ll hopefully be watching some of it throughout the year too, but Harry Potter gets mentioned frequently throughout the series! I’m hoping to re-read Harry Potter & The Cursed Child next year so this fits in nicely.

Common word in title

Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz & Orphan Black

Orphan X is one of the books I got for Christmas and I’m really looking forward to getting it started.  I got hooked on Orphan Black ages ago but I never got around to watching the latest series, so I’m hoping to get that finished this year!

MC with the same name

Conqueror by Conn Iggulden & Marco Polo

This might be cheating a little as they’re both about Kublai Khan but both the book and the show do share the same named MC so I figure it counts! Conqueror is the last of the Conn Iggulden series I need to read, but I’ve been getting less hooked on the series as we move further away from the original story of Temujin, and so just never got around to it.  Marco Polo is a show I’ve wanted to watch for ages, and I’ve been debating whether or not to watch it since it’s been cancelled, but it also looks so good!

Book Inspired a show

Game of Thrones & Game of Thrones!

I’ve read the books before but I got an illustrated edition of the first for Christmas so I’m planning to read that and refresh my knowledge so I can remember some of what’s happened for if/when Winds of Winter eventually comes out.  And of course, like everyone else I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next season of the show too!

The 100 & The 100

I started watching The 100 because I saw such rave reviews, but my other half wasn’t enjoying it and has stopped.  I’m hoping to get back into it this year and start the books too.

Low ratings but still interested

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge & Once Upon a Time

I’ve seen a few low ratings for Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, but I’m still intrigued because I’ve enjoyed both of the other books I’ve read by Rosamund Hodge.  Once Upon a Time was so good up until about the point where Frozen got bought in (weird because I am hugely obsessed with Frozen) and it’s one that my family have dropped. I’m still interested in watching it on my own, but I just haven’t got around to it yet.

Books & shows with spin-offs

Avatar (has the spin off The Legend of Korra) & Lady Midnight

I really enjoyed The Mortal Instruments but couldn’t really get into The Dark Artifices series at all, so I’m planning to try a different spin-off series and give Lady Midnight a try.  I’ve also seen a bit of Avatar but I’m hoping to finish the series, because I’ve come to a bit of a standstill.

The Vampire Diaries & The Heroes of Olympus series

I bought the next couple of The Heroes of Olympus series in an audible sale, and although The Vampire Diaries has gone downhill a bit I’m still hooked on it!

The Shows – TBW List

I’m not too sure yet what I’ll be watching in terms of new shows, but these are the shows I’m currently watching and hoping to make progress on. (Also, why have I got to season 5 and then stopped for so many series?!)

Already started: Nashville (S4+) || The Vampire Diaries (S7+) || Pretty Little Liars (S5+) || Once Upon a Time (S5+) || Orphan Black (S4+) || The 100 (S2+) || Grey’s Anatomy (S5+) || Avatar: The Last Airbender (S1) ||

Not yet started: Flash || Arrow || The Crown ||

I’ve no idea how I’ll do with the challenge, but I’m aiming for 100+ points because that’s a nice round number (literally plucked from the air if I’m honest!). I’ll be doing a monthly update to keep on track 🙂

  1. This is a really cool challenge, good luck with all your goals! I hope you do finish A:tLA and I hope you’ll enjoy catching up on TBBT ♥ I don’t think you need to watch Arrow first to get into Flash BUT the shows do crossover sometimes – though it’s fairly easy to fill in the blanks. I got into Arrow first and the first like 3 seasons were epic but then season 4 was something of a letdown. I’m hoping that this current season remains an improvement. As for The Flash well I’ve grown to love that series more with each season…though this current one has been a bit bumpy. Happy New Year my friend and all the best to you in 2017 xxxx

  2. Revolution is one of my favourite tv series that I finished last year, if you’re up for the challenge after try and read The Stand by Stephen King because he’s an obivious influence for the show but there are a lot of parralel from that book to the show too w/out it being a copy. V good.
